This Month some Nigga decided I don’t need my Laptop among other things

Earlier last month, My partner and I were in full gear working hard on our Start-up Dignited. Everything was flowing and we were making ground breaking progress on a couple of products we were developing. On the fateful day, we worked till about 2:00 am which was early because we usually worked all night but were too tired from too many sleep debts that we had accumulated over weeks of  work.

So I bid David good night and went to sleep while he continued working a little longer after which he also called it a night(morning)
I was up as always by 6:00 am and I stayed in bed contemplating on some of the solutions to the problems we were facing on the new product. David calls me and asks whether I kept the laptops in our bedroom. I thought it was one of our usual jokes but he got serious and said that the laptops weren’t around when he woke up. We quickly looked around and realized we had been robbed. They had taken two of our laptops, David’s Nexus smartphone and his wallet. For a moment it was unbelievable that they had robbed us.

We tried to look around and realized that the robber had opened the Kitchen door since it was bolted and not locked. After it sunk in that we had been robbed, I immediately thanked God that my family and friend were not harmed and also that they hadn’t taken my Hard Drive which had all my back up.

What followed was a unique form of withdrawal where you find yourself typing at anything that has a keyboard – Let me explain. As “Geeks” we are attached to our gadgets. Its the last thing you see before you sleep and possibly the first thing you look at when you wake up. Imagine they tell you that your gadgets are gone… It’s not something easy to accept.

I started a movie marathon, re-watching Big Bang Theory, Modern Family, the James Bond Movies among many others. I then read all the books that I had been putting off for a while. I did all I could to distract myself. in the mean time we looked for laptops to help us continue working.

This wasn’t the first time they were taking my laptop, it was the second time and on the first theft, they took all my back up including my Photography archives which were hundreds of Gigabytes of Photography. So I was a little wiser this time but apparently not wise enough. After critically analyzing the theft, it clearly looked like a well orchestrated job by an insider (Some one who was familiar with our surroundings and knew that our kitchen door didn’t have a padlock that night)

After the Pity Party and all, we were trying to get back on our feet then what seemed to be a line up of unwelcome events began to occur one by one. First, the Hard Drive with all my Back Up stops functioning and for a moment what I thought was Back Up was almost useless. Since I don’t watch much TV this Drive was also all the family entertainment with over 1TB of music, movies, documentaries, TED Talks, etc.

Next was the brokenness. This month seemed as though it was particularly sent to attack me. It was the month that I woke up and I couldn’t afford a pint of milk for my little girl. I felt so helpless.

It was also the month when for the first time in 2 years my landlord calls me because I was late on my rent for a few weeks. He told me that if I didn’t clear the next day by 10:00 am I should vacate his apartments. This later turned out to be a misunderstanding as I had never been late before.

While I was still dealing with that, a National Water official came to disconnect my water for a 40,000 Ugx bill. As you know UMEME and NWSC are cousins so while I was clearing water, my Yaka units seemed to be running on some weed as they were moving so fast. For some one who used to send 30-40 units per month on the conventional meter was now spending twice the number on the Yaka prepaid meters. (I am still investigating why)

While I was at that, We had a Family reunion which was like the best thing this month and after a day of fun with lots of cousins, nephews and nieces we got into a Taxi to go back home and forgot a box with a very nice Panasonic Blender that we loved very much  not to mention Genesis’ favorite Baby carrier.

They say when problems come, they come with all their cousins, uncles and even grannies.
I woke up one morning and I had some business to do in town. I only had 10,000 in my pocket so after having Lunch, I had 5k left to transport me home. Unfortunately the lady at the restaurant had given me a fake note which I put In my pocket without inspecting. I confidently got onto a Boda Boda (motorcycle) since I was late and when it came to paying the Boda guy, the guy is like “Ssebo kano kaffu, leeta yo akalala” translated “Sir this one is a fake note bring another one” and there I was stuck with a fake note and no money to pay the Boda guy. I will save you what happened after….

Of course we reported the case to the Police and the usual happened – nobody cares at the Police.

I have been left in a funny place. No laptop – since I didn’t have insurance neither (From what you see up) did I have enough savings to immediately purchase another. In my line of work, You cannot not have a laptop. I have been saving for a while for my Camera equipment to scale my Photography business and then this happens – of course I had to use some of my savings to save the situation.

As for me, in all things, I GIVE THANKS. So I dedicated the situation to the almighty God and told him to protect me from my enemies. I wake up every morning happy because the Lord sustains me.

Some of you may be going through a rough time probably even worse than my month but be encouraged in the Lord and his Love for you.

“Even young Lions sometimes lack food and are hungry but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing”
Ps. 34:10
